C. L. Moore was writing her books together with her husband, Henry Kuttner, while living in Hastings on Hudson and later in Hollywood. Most of her work was published under the pseudonym of Lawrence O'Donnell, but both she and her husband also used the names of Edward J. Bellin, Paul Edmonds, Noel Gardner, Will Garth, James Hall, Keith Hammond, Hudson Hastings, Peter Horn, Kelvin Kent, Robert O. Kenyon, C. H. Liddell, K. Hugh Maepenn, Scott Morgan, Lewis Padgett, Woodrow Wilson Smith, and Charles Stoddard.

Besides the classic sword and sorcery, C. L. Moore was also writing mystery and TV scripts. In 1981, she received the World Fantasy Award for life achievement.
