Alastair Reynolds

As far as science fiction writers go, this particular career track would probably qualify as terribly direct. Alastair Reynolds holds a doctorate in astronomy and although his first story was published in 1990, he only started writing science fiction full time in 2004, after working at the European Space Agency for thirteen years.
