The book mostly leaves the Guelen court of prince Cefwyn and his wife Ninevrise - a simmering pot not quite ready to boil over - and focuses on Tristen in his new position of the lord of Amefel. The direct and just manner in which Tristen dealt with the revolting Amefel nobles, together with his obvious Sihhe origin, make him a new hope in the eyes of the local folk.

But for now, hope is all Tristen brings, and much work needs to be done to make that hope come true. Besieged by the daily duties of running his constituency, Tristen hardly begins to cope when grave news of the war in Elwynor come, a flood of refugees reporting the fall of Ilefinian ...


Review

I was just about to embark on a praise of the wonderful writing style of the book, when I thought to look at my review of its prequel and found out I did just that already :-). Being lazy, I will simply let you check out that review.

I would rate the book as good, and am eagerly awaiting the ending volume of the series. The build up is really very promising, I just hope the conclusion will include a huge battle where Tristen will show all the bad guys (yeah, I know, childish :-).
