After the Dominator has been defeated by the joint forces of the White Rose and the Lady, the evil of his soul was imprisoned in a silver spike guarded by a young god in a tree shape. The inexperience of the god and the chaos after the battle with the Dominator, however, allows a group of four thieves to steal the spike. The news of the spike missing reach first the White Rose, who sets out to retrieve it. Very soon, however, everyone knows what is amiss, and the city where the thieves are hiding with the spike becomes a war zone. And as if your average greedy humans were not enough to cause a decent mess, the Limper, a mad undead wizard with an unquenchable thirst for revenge, appears at the scene with plans for the spike ... |

While the book does not read bad at all, I must admit I was a tad disappointed. Gone are the old characters that made the Black Company books so interesting. Instead of Croaker's cynical wisdom you have Case's smartass comments that really do not compare.
I also have my reservations about the story. It seems disjointed at times, for example when Raven abruptly drops his chase of Croaker, or when the unknown enemies set traps for Limper. There are simply too many things appearing out of nowhere.
