A wealthy lord hires Kieran, a famous mercenary, for an outrageous price. Clearly, things are more than they seem, and Kieran accepts his job as much out of curiosity as for the money. On a journey to his employer's estate, Kiernan meets Sorak, a nomad who saves the boat Kiernan is travelling on during an attack of giants, and offers him a job as second in command after witnessing his prowess.

Sharing his destination with Kiernan, Sorak accepts the offer. His talents are put to use rather soon, when Kiernan's caravan comes under a sudden attack. Still, this is nothing compared to the surprise that awaits both Sorak and Kiernan when the mystery of the too-good-to-be-true job offer begins to unravel ...

Review

A decent story, although a little bit too much of a crude invitation to read the other books about Sorak (the book seems to spend as much time on making Sorak an enigma worth reading about as it does on the actual story, which is not necessarily bad, only it reminds me too much of the fact that some books are written for profit more than for anything else). Not to forget - I like the cover illustration, compared to the covers of the other four books of the Chronicles of Athas, this one is really good. The book itself is about average.
