With king Shrewd dead and prince Verity lost somewhere in the search for Elderlings, prince Regal can finally get his hands on the throne he was aiming at for so long. The only thing that spoils his day is the chance of Verity actually succeeding in his search. Regal does his best to prevent that though, setting out to capture queen Kettricken and ordering his cotterie to follow the path of Verity towards the Elderlings.

Believed dead by Regal, Fitz decides the only course left for him is to kill Regal for all the wrong he did. Falling into a trap, Fitz barely escapes death in his assassination attempt, and is only saved by Verity, who bids him to come to his aid. It remains to be seen if it will be Fitz or Regal and his soldiers who reach Verity first ...

Review

A very good ending to a very good trilogy. Putting aside my praise of the text, which would do little more than repeat what I said about the other volumes, I still have to mention the ending though, which I find particularly nice. At one time, I was almost afraid it will be in the traditional happyend style, with everyone living happily ever after, Good that it is not so (even though I would wish something better for Fitz :-). A good book on my rating scale, almost ranging on very good.
