The story revolves around Mahtra, a mysterious human-like being that lives with a group of fugitives in a cave under the city of Urik. Mahtra has been created rather than born, hence she has a mind of a child although she looks grown. One day, the fugitives Mahtra lives with are slaughtered, but Mahtra learns the name of the halfling who stands behind the slaughter. It is Kakzim, the same halfling who tried to poison the city with Laq, and since the slaughter took place near Urik's water reservoir, Mahtra's ordeal draws attention of Urik's king Hamanu. Hearing Mahtra's recounting of the events, Hamanu decides to send his high templar after Kakzim. Not just any high templar though - Hamanu summons Pavek, a druid who helped to thwart Kakzim's efforts earlier, but who would rather not have anything to do with Hamanu ... |

Although a continuation of the first book of the series, the story is good enough to be read alone. Still, read the other two - alone, the book ranks average on my scale, but I'm almost tempted to mark the trilogy as good :-).
